Sandpoint volunteer firefighter and ultra-marathon runner Gwen LeTutour teams up with newly formed local charity Plant-Positive in an attempt to set a world-record on April 28th, 2018: *In an effort to raise awareness about cancer prevention via a healthy lifestyle, Gwen will be the first person to run 100 miles in full firefighter gear.
According to the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), nearly 50% of the most common
cancers can be prevented.
Although, many measures have been implemented to reduce the exposure to carcinogens for firefighters and our community, very little to none has been done to address the role that diet and
lifestyle play in the prevention of cancer.
The 2013-2014 Stats by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that the percent of adults aged 20 and over with overweight or obesity was 70.7% and a recent survey was conducted showing that 67 to 77% of career firefighters in the US are overweight or obese. This, in turn, paves the way for cardiovascular disease and cancer to be the number 1 and 2 killers among firefighters and the general population.
Come to Evans Brothers Coffee Shop on March 26 at 6:30 pm in Sandpoint, ID for the Plant-Positive kick-off Party. The goal for this event is to empower everyone to implement the 10 recommendations for cancer prevention by the AICR and invite the community to take part in the event by attending, aiding and supporting Gwen during his run; which will take place from the Sandpoint Fire Department (downtown Sandpoint) to the Dover Fire Station and back (15 loops).
